The description of mothers’ knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding according to the maternal characteristics at Dr. Ramelan Central Naval Hospital, Surabaya

Abstract

Background: Exclusive Breastfeeding supports optimal growth and development and prevents kids from getting sick. Knowledge about Exclusive Breastfeeding is one of the most important factors affecting its practice. This study aims to know about knowledge level based on mothers’ characteristics.

Methods: This descriptive study, which involved 39 respondents, was conducted in the Pediatric Wards and Outpatient Clinics of Dr. Ramelan Central Naval Hospital Surabaya in October 2019 using a questionnaire. The focus of this study is knowledge about Exclusive Breastfeeding based on the mother’s age, educational level, employment, counseling, and birth orders. The inclusion criterion is mothers with 0-6 month-old babies. The exclusion criterion is a mother who is unable to speak Bahasa. We classify knowledge levels as good, average, and insufficient based on the questionnaire.

Result: This study includes 39 respondents. There are 21 out of 26 (80.8%) mothers in the group of 20-35 years old who have better knowledge. Fifteen out of 16 (93.8%) mothers who graduated from high school have better knowledge. There 26 out of 31 employed mothers (83/8%) have better knowledge. We also found that 22 out of 25 (88%) who’ve got counseling have better knowledge. Of 21 mothers with firstborns, there are 20 mothers (95.2%) who have better knowledge.

Conclusion: Younger age, higher educational level, employed mothers, mothers who’ve got counseling, and those with first-born tend to have better knowledge on Exclusive Breastfeeding.
